Champions League 2009 Barcelona 2 Manchester United 0
Tonight the 27th of May 2009 Barcelona made history in Rome, the first Spanish team to win the triple. In a game where Barcelona out classed and outplayed Manchester United they won the Champions League final 2009.
Manchester United looked set to take charge of the game from the outset with Christiano Rinaldo shooting for goal several times right from the outset of this historic champions league championship final.
Everything changed when Andres Iniesta crossed to Samuel Eto’o who scored, beating Edwin van der Sar in the tenth minute. The game changed significantly at this point. Manchester United lost control of this remarkable champions league game.
Aparently losing heart Manchester United lost the offensive role and went on the defensive, not the approach to win a champions league final. Barcelona ran rings around them with their organised approach passing the ball round and keeping possession. A skill brought to them when Pep Guardiola took the managers role last summer.
At half time the game looked almost over, but after a pep talk from Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United came back to the second half of the 2009 champions league final looking as if they were back on form. Attacking once again and apparently playing Barcelona at their own game passing and keeping possession.
It wasn’t to last though when mid fielder Xavi Herandez crossed to Lionel Messi in the 70th minute his signature header put Barcelona 2-0 up against Manchester United in the 70th minute.
Some might say it was the way Manchester United beat Barcelona in last years semi-final which was driving them forward for revenge. However the excellent organisation and attention to detail lead by Guardiola was also seen in the semi-final of the champions league when Barcelona beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to qualify for their place in the cup final.
